President Trump on Friday slammed the European Union\u2019s (EU) fines against<\/a> major U.S. tech firms as \u201cdiscriminatory actions\u201d and threatened to open a trade investigation, opening the door to additional tariffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n Trump lashed out at the European bloc after it imposed a $3.5 billion fine against Google for violating antitrust rules, accusing it of \u201ceffectively taking money that would otherwise go to American Investments and Jobs.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cVery unfair, and the American Taxpayer will not stand for it!\u201d the president wrote on Truth Social<\/a>. \u201cAs I have said before, my Administration will NOT allow these discriminatory actions to stand.\u201d <\/p>\n He pointed to the EU\u2019s previous fines against Apple and Google<\/a>, threatening to start a Section 301 proceeding, which allows the U.S. to investigate and respond to unfair trade practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe European Union must stop this practice against American Companies, IMMEDIATELY!\u201d he added in a separate post. <\/p>\n The EU reportedly held off on fining Google earlier this week amid concerns about how Trump would respond, particularly as it has awaited a U.S. announcement cutting auto tariffs<\/a>. <\/p>\n
