Major artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) enhancements are coming to Google Maps<\/a>, the company announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n In a blog post<\/a>, Google shared that it’s “introducing the first hands-free, conversational driving experience in Google Maps<\/a>, built with Gemini and our comprehensive information about the real world.”<\/p>\n The company has been incorporating its Gemini AI<\/a> technology into several of its products recently, and now, the world’s most popular digital mapping program will be getting some additional AI upgrades.<\/p>\n In the blog, Google likened the technology to “having a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat who can confidently help you get where you\u2019re going.”<\/p>\n Hands-free help with multistep tasks:<\/strong> Google’s Gemini AI chatbot will be able to support multistep tasks. <\/p>\n One example, highlighted in the blog, is that users will be able to ask and get answers to hyper-specific questions like: \u201cIs there a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route, something within a couple of miles?”<\/p>\n This feature will start rolling out in the U.S. on Android and iOS in the coming weeks. <\/p>\n Landmark-based navigation:<\/strong> Gemini will call out landmarks in addition to distances, providing more precise direction instructions. <\/p>\n “Gemini does this by analyzing Google Maps\u2019 fresh, comprehensive information about 250 million places and cross-referencing it with Street View images to curate the most useful landmarks visible from the street,” according to the blog.<\/p>\n This feature has started rolling out in the U.S. on Android and iOS.<\/p>\n Connects to other apps:<\/strong> Gemini will be able to connect with other Google applications<\/a>, such as Google Calendar, allowing users to set reminders while using the AI for navigation.<\/p>\n This feature will start rolling out in the U.S. on Android and iOS in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n Proactive traffic alerts:<\/strong> Users will receive advanced notice of nearby traffic disruptions from Gemini, even if they aren’t actively navigating. <\/p>\n This feature has already started rolling out in the U.S. exclusively on Android.<\/p>\n Lens in Maps:<\/strong> “Once you arrive, you can still rely on Gemini to explore,” the blog boasts. <\/p>\nWhat are the new features?<\/h2>\n
