Axios<\/a>\u00a0later reported that a Department of Justice (DOJ) source said Bowser was not under investigation.<\/p>\n\u201cAxios is reporting that I’m not under investigation. So make your question complete,\u201d Bowser said when asked about the matter at an unrelated press conference.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am not under investigation. I have not been contacted by any federal officials about investigating me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Bowser also said that her office and circle of employees has not been contacted by the justice Department nor received any subpoenas.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe haven’t been contacted at all,\u201d she said. \u201cI have checked [with] our lawyers, and we have a regular kind of chain of who talks to who, and we have not been contacted, not related to me or to anybody else, as I’m aware and I have no explanation from federal officials about what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Times reported that the investigation was being led the U.S. Attorney for the D.C., a somewhat unusual arrangement, as DOJ’s Public Integrity Section would typically conduct investigations into corruption by elected officials. That section, however, has been gutted between firings and resignations.<\/p>\n
However, the subject of an investigation may not always have insight into a probe still in its early stages.<\/p>\n
Bowser has navigated contentious issues with the Trump administration but is generally seen as having a positive relationship with the White House. The Justice Department in recent weeks however, has brought charges against Trump foes including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James (D).<\/p>\n
Other Trump officials also have connections with the Qatari government. President Trump agreed to accept a $200 million jet from the country to replace the aging Air Force One.<\/p>\n
