A new poll shows growing concerns among citizens over the potential environmental effects caused by artificial intelligence<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Associated Press-NORC Center poll<\/a>, released Thursday, found about 4 in 10 U.S. adults said they are either \u201cextremely\u201d or \u201cvery\u201d concerned about AI\u2019s environmental impact.<\/p>\n Comparatively, 30 percent said they are \u201csomewhat\u201d concerned and 27 percent were either \u201cnot very or not at all\u201d worried about the new technology\u2019s effect on the planet. <\/p>\n Some concerns stem from AI data centers<\/a>, which take up large portions of land and require access to a water source, which cools computers that can overheat from the amount of use required for large language models.\u00a0<\/p>\n Tech billionaire Elon Musk is developing an AI data center in Memphis, Tenn., which has been subject to complaints<\/a> from residents who said the turbines on site have released hazardous materials into the air in violation of the Clean Air Act.<\/p>\n Aaron Gunnoe, a 29-year-old independent in Ohio, told The Associated Press he\u2019s worried about the lack of effort made to mitigate environmental hazards.<\/p>\n \u201cThey haven\u2019t done anything in the way of offsetting it cleanly,\u201d he said, referring to the large amounts of electricity and fossil fuels used to power AI data centers. <\/p>\n \u201cThey just keep building more and more,\u201d Gunnoe added.<\/p>\n
